Miscellaneous Ship 72 Information

The following are some interesting items which don't fit neatly into any particular category

The following information acknowledged Ship 72 and the role it played in the Town's Bicentennial reenactment celebration in 1976.
"The ORLEANS SEA SCOUTS are comprised of two groups of young people, known as "ships": the older of the two is SHIP 72, the SEA EXPLORER SHIP NAUSET, founded in 1946, sponsored until 1954 by the Orleans Yacht Club and since that time by the Orleans Rotary Club. The younger group is the girls ship, SHIP 272, the SEA EXPLORER SHIP "TIOGA", founded in 1972 and sponsored by SHIP 72. The part of the British Navy is being played by the Orleans Sea Scouts. The Ketch Nauset will serve as the H.M.S. Newcastle while the Scouts will take the part of the British tars and will transport the 64th Regiment of Foot to and from shore for the battle re-enactment. The Sea Scouts are familiar to the townspeople of Orleans, Eastham and Brewster mainly through their paper drives, which they have been holding to pay their expenses since 1946; through uniformed scouts manning the microphones at Town Meetings, and through their regular attendance at Memorial Day Parades. As those who have been Sea Scouts will attest, the Ships have a busy schedule of activities throughout the year. A few highlights are: rowing in their three 26-foot pulling boats, culminating in a four-day row to Nantucket and return in 1954. This was to raise interest and money to build a 42-foot sailing ketch, which the scouts completed in 1957 with their own hands. The ketch was repaired and re-launched this year. In it, the scouts have cruised to Maine most summers since 1957. They have also attended almost all the America Cup Races at Newport and went to Montreal for Expo '76 and to St. John, N.B. for an international scout regatta."
