Return From Cruise to Maine
Photos by Richard Rich - Narrative by Martin Rich, alumnus
Attached are photos taken by my father on the return of the SES Nauset from a 2 week trip to Bar Harbor Maine in 1958.
In photos #1 and #2 from left to right: Marty Rich, Jim Knowles, Mon Cochran (Skipper), Bernie Collins (Standing), Peter Soule, Ralph MacKenzie, Ray Squire, Malcolm Hobbs, and Mon Cochran, Jr.
As I remember it, when we left Nauset Harbor the seas were rough as a result of a Hurricane that had recently gone by, but the wind was light. We had to wait before heading North as it would mean passing the restricted firing range at Camp Wellfleet.
From Bar Harbor we headed Southward to Northeast Harbor, Southwest Harbor, through Eggemoggin Reach and under the Deer Isle Bridge and onward with various stops in Penobscot Bay.
We then stopped in Falmouth Foreside, Maine at a friend’s (possible a relatives) of Mon’s, we all got to take a real shower in their home.
Again onward to Portsmouth, NH where we were forbidden to take photos of the submarines in the Harbor. Then out to the Isles of Shoals where, after going ashore, some of us didn’t get back in time to take the dingy back out to the SES Nauset and had too swim out to it in very cold water.
We went through the Cape Cod Canal and stopped in Woods Hole where we picked up Bernard Collins and Malcom Hobbs and dropped off Paul Henson for the final trip through Nantucket Sound and up into Pleasant Bay to Arey’s Pond.
